Ringling Bros. Circus Shuts Down amid Controversy After 146 Years


The World Famous Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will be shutting down their traveling performances in May 2017.

One of the main reasons for the shutting down of the circus is multiple charges of animal cruelty. The circus would train their animals with whips and bullhooks,  according to mnn.com. These materials would  be used during the middle of a show. Bullhooks are only banned in two states, California, and Rhode Island LA Times, The Sacramento Bee).

President and CEO of The Humane Society of the U.S. stated on Sunday January 15th, 2017,”I know this is bittersweet for the Feld family, but I applaud their decision to move away from an institution grounded on inherently inhumane wild animal acts.” mnn.com

The circus will be coming to an end with its last performance in May in Providence, Rhode Island.
