Driving in California has just become more safer but possibly more complicated as a result of complicated driving laws taking place on January 1, according to abc7news.com.
One new law that will be passed is that Californians are no longer allowed to use a handheld wireless phone or wireless electronic device while driving, according to kcra.com.
The mount must be on the dashboard or placed in one of two positions on the windshield: in the lower right corner or lower left corner, according to abc7news.com.
“People were holding it in their hands using their GPS. So this new law is going to eliminate that all together and now you have to have it mounted,” Officer Juan Galvan with California Highway Patrol explained.
Another law being passed makes sure lane splitting must done safely. Lane splitting wasn’t previously illegal, but it wasn’t defined as legal either, according to abc7news.com.
The law allows the California Highway Patrol to develop education guidelines in a way that ensures the safety of motorcyclists, drivers and passengers, according to kcra.com.
“If traffic is stopped at a standstill, you can’t have a motorcycle that is traveling at 50-60 mph as it’s dangerous for both the motorcyclist and the vehicles around as well,” Galvan explained.
Another new law includes that children under the age of two must ride rear-facing in an appropriate child passenger safety seat. Children weighing 40 pounds or more, or standing 40 or more inches tall, are exempt, according to krcrtv.com.
Other new laws include increased inspections of charter and tour buses in the wake of tragic fatal crashes, according to abc7news.com.
Another new law requires a driving under the influence (DUI) offender to install an ignition interlock device (IID) on their vehicle for a specified period of time in order to get a restricted driver license or to reinstate their license, according to krcrtv.com.
One new law includes a mandatory school bus procedure to ensure that children aren’t left inside, according to anc7news.com.
