Angel City Football Club, a new women’s professional soccer team, debuted their new team and club on March 19, 2022, in a pre-season tournament. The team was founded in the summer of 2020 and, in their premiere season, will feature Christen Press among other famous soccer players.
Angel City has designated California Lutheran University as its training arena, and, according to Whittier Daily News, will “provide internships to undergraduate and graduate students…, guest lecture in a variety of Cal Lutheran classes, and…participate in chalk talks with student-athletes.”
Christen Press, a former US women’s soccer player, played for the U.S. team for multiple years in a row, participated in two FIFA World Cups and scored a total of 64 goals on the U.S. team. Born and raised in Southern California, Press says, “The dream of being a pro player in L.A. was always elusive for me; every team that I’ve played for has always been like, ‘You know, when L.A. gets a team, we promise we’ll send you there.’ And it always felt everyone’s been able to say that because no one knew when it was happening” (U.S. Soccer). Press will be playing for Angel City FC in the 2022-2023 U.S. women’s professional soccer league.
Angel City Football Club introduced their new team to women’s professional soccer on March 19, 2022, in a game against San Diego Wave. The game ended in a tie, with both teams scoring one goal.
“We were born on the streets of Los Angeles and stand side-by-side with our community,” Angel City’s official website, angelcity.com, says, “Football is our passion and the vehicle through which we speak to our community and passionate followers. Our purpose is to set higher expectations, and it guides us to strive for better in everything we do. Our purpose unites us all as we soar higher together, every day.”
