Twenty-three year old Shohei Ohtani, already in the 13th game of the 2018 Angel’s season has three home runs which is tied for the second most on the team, but something unusual about this statistic is that he is a pitcher, he is a very unique player, and here is why.

Shohei Ohtani is a japanese professional baseball player who is a pitcher but also designated hitter.  This is unusual because in all of baseball history pitchers were usually strictly pitchers, and not very good at hitting according to ESPN.com.

Ohtani was originally on the Hokkaido-Nippon Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball league, “Pacific League” located in Japan.  He was the first pick for the Fighters in the 2012 draft. He has officially recorded the fastest pitch in NPB history and by a Japanese pitcher, throwing at 102.5 MPH, according to MLB.com.

When he made the decision to try and join the MLB, he proved himself in spring training and started on the 25 man roster for opening day at designated hitter, his first at-bat, he hit a single.  On April third, he hit his first MLB home run, a 397 footer for a three run home run. On only his second start at pitching of the year on April eighth he pitched a whole seven scoreless innings whilst striking out 12 people, according to ESPN.com.

Shohei Ohtani is one of the best hitters, and pitchers in the league and the Angels will definitely value him as an X factor to their 25 man roster, according to baseball-reference.com.
