Esperanza’s Women Cross Country Takes 2nd in State
Esperanza’s Women’s Cross Country placed second in California State CIF Championship on November 26, 2016 in Fresno,California.
Coach Medellin stated that, “This success was a total team effort, each runner gave beyond their all.”
With one mile to go in the race, two schools, Aptos from the Central Coast and La Costa Canyon from San Diego, were tied in 3rd place with Esperanza. “Esperanza took over the race by pushing themselves to the very end,” explained Coach Medellin.
It all came down to the 6th runner,Katelyn Wilson, who broke the tie. Shannon Mackellar and Summer Shea together passed over 30 girls in the last mile.
The team waited anxiously for the results to be posted. They hoped that they had done enough to at least make 3rd place. As soon as they heard their name called in second place there was tears, screaming, and cheers all around, according to Coach Medellin.
“The teammates Hannah Dumaine, Lauren Reeves and Desiree Oden also had solid races to help the team capture their 2nd place finish,” added Coach Medellin
“Overall the team worked as hard as they could to make it in second place, and it paid off,” concluded Coach Medellin.
