Two time Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings Center Anze Kopitar has assumed the role of the team’s new captain, stated Kings’ President and General Manager Dean Lombardi, according to

Kopitar inherits the role from Dustin Brown, who has served as the team’s captain since 2008. He becomes the 14th captain in LA Kings history.

Kopitar stated, “The initial thought obviously, it’s a very exciting day for me being named captain,” “It’s something that’s during Brownie’s time, I‘ve never given it a whole lot of thought  because I always looked to him as being our guy.

“It’s a bit of sweet sour taste in my mouth just because he and I are very good friends and have developed a strong relationship over the course of my tenure in L.A. Quite frankly, he’s the only guy who’s been there right when I got to L.A,” reported The Daily News.

The Los Angeles Kings have reportedly told Dustin Brown he will no longer be the team’s captain. Failing to hit 30 points in a single season since the team’s Cup victory in 2011-12, the former 50-point scorer has only been seeing a steady decline in statistics over the years, reported CBS Los Angeles.

Brown said,”I felt like I’ve done a very good job leading this team,” he said. “The last couple of years have been really disappointing for all involved, and we all have a lot of work to do to get back where we want to be,” stated USA TODAY.

“But I just remember when I was named captain, where we were at as a team. It was not a pretty picture. So what I’ve been able to accomplish with the help of a lot of my teammates has been pretty great, and I felt I’m still able to do that,” added Brown.

“Ultimately, I understand the decision and I respect the decision,” Brown said. “Part of my problem was how it was handled. It just put me in an awkward spot.”

“It was a tough pill to swallow,” Brown said. “There are a lot of emotions that go through it. But at the end of the day, it was really out of my control because this is a management decision, not the players voting on it or anything like that. To be quite honest, it would’ve been a lot harder,” reported USA TODAY.

Brown stated, “I felt like me a Kopitar made a great relationship with each other and I have faith in him and he will lead our team as captain.
