Max Scherzer Ties record for Most Strikeouts in a Single Game

Starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals, Max Scherzer, threw a complete game acquiring 20 strikeouts at Nationals Stadium on May 11.

Max Scherzer is the ace for the Washington Nationals but originally he played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and then for the Detroit Tigers, who he threw threw 20 strikeouts against. In 2013 he won the Cy Young with the Detroit Tigers.

Scherzer struck out 11 batters with his fastball, five with his slider and four with his changeup. This was the third 20-strikeout game that Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has been a part of. He was the opposing catcher in 20-strikeout games by both Roger Clemens,1986, and Kerry Wood, 1998, reported to espn.go.com

The 20 strikeout club that Scherzer join is very small consisting of only 4 players.” Roger Clemens (who did it twice), Kerry Wood, Randy Johnson and, now, Scherzer. The four men who have struck out 20 batters in a major league game in nine innings,” reported ESPN.com

Scherzer had a chance at setting the record for most strikeouts in nine innings but Tigers catcher James McCann hit a weak grounder to 3rd base which ended the game.

According to ESPN, In the game Scherzer had a 33 swings and misses which was the second most in the past two seasons. Scherzer was two away from tying Kershaw who set the record last September 35 swings and misses.
