Esperanza Water Polo Recap: Men’s Finish Third in Season and Women Advance to the Playoffs

“The women are winning the North Hills Conference for the second year in a row. The men’s team finished with a 17-13 record for a third place finish in the Century league,” stated Esperanza High School water polo coach Galen Diaz.

Diaz credits leadership to the team to the overall success. The Aztec women’s water polo team are led by Megan Dahlson, freshman Rachel Westphal in the field, and Sedona Sinclair in the goal. The girls are doing very well.

For the men’s rival game between Yorba Linda and Esperanza, “Junior Luke Rhone and Senior Dakota Galvin had a tremendous game while beating Yorba Linda High school in the Battle of the Boulevard winning 6 to 3,” stated Diaz.

The men’s water polo team spends about three hours in the morning and four hours in the afternoon practicing. Practice includes of swimming, lifting, and practicing technique and plays. Rhone indicated that he found, “The hardest part of this year was our training and effort we put into every practice.” Rhone says he loves most about doing water polo, “Is summer tournaments where you and your team are playing games all day.”

The men’s season is over but the women’s continues to a new level. “They will head into the CIF playoffs where they should challenge for the championship,” stated Diaz, “The Playoffs start in two weeks.”
