YLHS Men’s Basketball: New League, New Challenges

“Our biggest competition is EVERY team in the Century Conference,” commented Coach Pietsch, Yorba Linda High School’s Men’s head basketball coach. Despite the challenges that this new conference puts forth, Coach Pietsch believes that his team is “balanced and competitive.”

“We have moved into a new league and it’s brutal with a bunch of good basketball teams,” added Coach Pietsch. As they move into the Century Conference, the basketball team will face other teams like Foothill and Canyon who are the class of the league right now. They will also have to compete against the returning champion Brea.

According to Coach Pietsch the team’s biggest weakness is “defense and rebounding.” The varsity team needs to do a better job of allowing opponents to ONLY take one shot. They also need to do a better job of not letting opponents get into the key and have an easier shot.

“During any given game, we could have several different players stand out for their performance.” stated Coach Pietsch. Isaac Douglass leads the team in scoring and is the second leading rebounder.  He is also a returning MVP as a junior. Other players like Alex Godoy and Josh Miller have also been making great strides as well.

The official season starts on January 13th when the varsity basketball team plays Foothill. The Yorba Linda Mustangs will play their first game at home.
