Two Earthquakes Strike in Guam

Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.6 and 5.1 struck in the Marianas trench on May 22, 2018. The earthquakes were about 76 miles (122 kilometers) southeast of Guam, according to taiwannews.

The first earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 occurred in the Marianas Trench at an approximate depth of 9.7 miles. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) claimed that the initial earthquake hit 47 miles southeast of the Inarajan Village, at approximately 10:26 am, according to newsinfo.inquirer.

The USGS originally stated the earthquake to be at a magnitude of 6.0, but later said the exact magnitude which was 5.6. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said there was no threat to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands regarding Tsunamis. The USGS did not report any immediate damage, saying on their website to have been “weak shaking,” according to newsweek.com.

The second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck just under two hours before the first earthquake, centering around 50 miles southeast of of Injaran at a depth of around 23 miles near the Mariana trench. The USGS stated second quake shook the island of Guam at 12:24 pm, according to stripes.com.

The USGS later issued the exact measurements of the second earthquake, explaining that the quake was centered at 49.7 miles away from Inajaran. The exact depth of the earthquake took place 22.7 miles below surface close to the Mariana trench, according to sbs.com.

Guam Homeland Security/A+Office of Civil Defense spokeswoman Jenna Blas made a statement explaining that there were no reports made to the Guam E911 dispatch of any injuries, deaths, or damage from the morning quake. The community is being reminded by the agencies that in an event of a earthquake to follow earthquake procedure- “Drop, Cover, and hold on” until the shaking comes to a stop, according to guampdn.com.
