The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) for children ages 5-11, as of October 29, 2021, according to

Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock says, “As a mother and a physician, I know that parents, caregivers, school staff, and children have been waiting for today’s authorization. Vaccinating younger children against COVID-19 will bring us closer to returning to a sense of normalcy.”

So far, the COVID vaccine for children 5-11 has proven effective, having a 91% success rate in preventing the disease. The vaccine has also proven to be safe; stated, “The vaccine’s safety was studied in approximately 3,100 children aged 5 through 11 who received the vaccine and no serious side effects have been detected in the ongoing study.”

Many parents are concerned about this vaccine because of how fast it was created and how it might affect their children. Dr. Philip Robinson, the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Principal Investigator of Infectious Disease Research stated in an interview with the Matador Messenger, “The clinical trials clearly shows that these vaccines are very safe and effective. It is important to remember that COVID infection in kids 5-11 is not just another ‘cold’ or ‘flu’…COVID in general has left about 120,000 children in the US without a primary caregiver such as a parent because they died of COVID.”

The issue of making sure to prevent the spread and flatten the curve has grown more and more. Thus, increasing the demand for more people to be vaccinated. Dr. Robinson additionally stated, “The biggest reward has been helping to develop new treatments and vaccines for COVID. It is amazing to watch a patient who would have died from COVID survive because of the drugs that our team at Hoag helped develop(Remdesivir, Baricitinib, and Tocilizumab.)”

The COVID vaccine has helped so many and should be issued to all. With this vaccine for children, 5-11 society can take a huge step forward to flattening the curve and getting the pandemic over with. Overall, all of our front line and medical are greatly valued. Dr. Robinson gives this advice to any teen pursuing the medical field, “Do it. Medical careers will always be needed. Every day is different and rewarding.”
