Guinness World Records
On November 21st, 2020, Mike Jack set a new world record for eating three Carolina Reapers in the shortest amount of time ever, to be precise, exactly 9.728 seconds.
The Carolina Reaper, officially certified as the world’s hottest pepper in 2017 and a mix of both the Habanero and Ghost Pepper, delivers an average of 1.6 million Scoville Heat Units. According to QuePasaFoods, “Scoville heat units, also known as SHU, is simply a measurement of the number of times capsaicin needs to be diluted by sugar-water. The number of Scoville Heat Units (SHU) in a pepper or even hot sauce indicates the amount of capsaicin present. The higher the Scoville rating, the hotter the pepper.”
Clocking this as his fourth Guiness World achievement, Mike Jack successfully broke the record that’s been untouched for six years. His other achievements include the most Bhut Jolokia chilli peppers eaten in two minutes (246 grams), the most Bhut Jolokia chilli peppers eaten in one minute (97 grams), and the fastest time to eat three Bhut Jolokia chillies (9.75 seconds). The “Bhut Jolokia” is another name for the Ghost Pepper, which has an average of a little over one million Scoville Heat Units.
According to Guinness World Records, Mike Jack stated, “I’ve made it my goal to hold as many Guinness World Records in chilli eating as possible.”
Due to Covid-19 social distancing measures, Mike had recorded his attempt in London, Ontario, with his wife, Jamie Jack, as the timekeeper and witness. In order to legally attempt breaking the record, each of the three peppers had to weigh at least 5 grams and a certificate had to be provided proving the peppers were in fact Carolina Reapers. The Jacks then sent the video of Mike eating the peppers to Guinness World Records to be certified and approved.
In the video, as Mike pukes into a bucket, he states, “I did it. I finally did it. It feels so good, but hurts so bad.”
