All over the country, probably right now, people are losing focus, yawning, and losing motivation because of sleep deprivation. According to Junior Scholastic, “60 percent of middle schoolers and 70 percent of high schoolers get less than eight hours of sleep each night.”
Some high schools in Las Cruces, New Mexico have realized this and are letting students request to leave for 20-30 minutes to nap in a “nap pod.” “Of the 100 students who used the pod, 99 were able to return to class within 20 minutes — with tremendous increases in energy and mood,” Linda Summers of New Mexico said.
Some students at Bernardo Yorba have thoughts to share. Kendall Smith, a seventh grader, never sleeps enough and she gets tired during the day, so she believes a nap would make her focus more.
Austin Nesbihal, an eighth grader, stated, “Everybody needs a break, so we need it. What’s the best way to get someone to stay up all night? Let them take short naps at school.”
The California State Legislature agrees that sleep is important because they just approved a law saying that middle and high schools will start no earlier than 8:30 am. The law will take effect in July 2022, for the 2022-2023 school year. Our school, Bernardo Yorba, already starts later than 8 am (8:35 and 9:07).
PYLUSD schools may not adopt a “nap” room system any time soon but there are some proactive steps students can take to ensure better rest and better school performance. According to sleepfoundation.org, you should stick to a regular sleep schedule, exercise daily, sleep on a comfortable bed and pillow, avoid heavy meals in the afternoon.
