Global Warming: “The Eyes of All Future Generations Are upon You”

We can take steps to slow the process of Global Warming.

“The eyes of all future generations are upon you, and if you choose to fail us, I say, we will never forgive you,” declared Greta Thunberg at the United Nations Assembly in 2019. A Swedish teenage environmental activist of 16, Greta’s campaigning on climate change has gained international recognition. What does she mean about ‘future generations’ and ‘failing’?

According to many scientists and experts, our world is in serious danger because of global warming (also known as climate change). Global warming is the rise of temperature on Earth due to “increases in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations produced by human activity,” according to markedbyteachers/global-warming

As temperatures rise, disaster strikes with icebergs melting and arctic animals, such as polar bears, near extinction. According to, “If the world temperature rises by two degrees, mountain glaciers and rivers will start to disappear and mountainous regions will see more landslides, as the permafrost that held them together melts away.” Each degree of rising temperature will affect the world tremendously.

“Global warming is no longer a philosophical threat, no longer a future threat, no longer a threat at all. It’s our reality,” stated Bill McKibben, an American environmentalist, author, and journalist who has written extensively on the negative impacts of global warming, according to McKibben  has indicated that we have wasted time thinking that someday the task of stopping the progress of global warming will be done by somebody other than ourselves. We dream, we think, we hope, but none of us are actually working to help stop it from worsening, according to the source.

Ted Turner, an American media mogul and philanthropist, has stated, “While the problem can sometimes seem overwhelming, we can turn things around — but we must move beyond climate talk to climate action.” This means that even though it is not possible to stop the impacts of global warming with a blink of an eye, it is possible, if we put our efforts together, to keep it from worsening.

Here are some things we can do to help stop global warming from its long-term progress:

  • Don’t waste water and food
  • Grow your own food and eat less meat
  • Buy organic and local if possible
  • Using energy-efficient cars
  • Install solar panels on your roofs
  • Choose a “green career”
  • Use energy wisely
  • Walk or ride bikes to school

“Instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come,” concluded Greta Thunburg .
