In Newport Beach, California, officials are enlisting plastic coyotes to scare off sea lions. According to the Newport Beach Website, the decoys will be scattered around the Newport Harbor, where visitors may see them on docks and swim steps.
Sea lions may be cute, but they can cause a great deal of damage. If enough sea lions manage to climb onto a small boat, they can sink it. They can also be very rowdy and aggressive toward humans and other animals, MNN stated.
“The harbor operations division is testing a new sea lion deterrent, plastic coyote decoys.” The Newport City Home Page reported.
So far, the amount of sea lions has decreased. These decoys are all plastic, except for a furry tail.
These coyotes even have names based on Looney Tunes, Wile E. Coyote, Bugs, Elmer, Sylvester, Yosemite, Taz, Marvin and Babs, according to the City of Newport Beach Website.
“… so far, they’ve done a decent job on the public docks…” MNN said.
To scare away the sea lions, the plastic coyotes are posed in an attack stance.
About a year ago, the city had large colored inflatables. The inflatables had flailing arms and shaking hips, stated the OC Register.
“Forty dollar plastic coyotes.” MNN stated.
Even though the encounters of sea lions and coyotes are very low, the decoys are still doing their job and scaring off the sea lions.
Coyote decoys can also be used to scare away other unwanted animals such as Canadian Geese, rabbits, and skunks, according to MNN.
Newport Beach officials ask that you do your best to keep sea lions away as well, and to try not to encourage their arrival.
