Scientists Create Plans to Prevent Chaos from Supervolcano
A “supervolcano” located underneath Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming expected to erupt in thousands of years, may erupt sooner than predicted, according to MNN.
The volcano which scientists have determined has not erupted in 600,000 years is capable of releasing 1,000 cubic kilometers of magma in a single eruption and is still active, reported mnn. The Yellowstone Supervolcano has been monitored by scientists for any activity. The massive volcano is expected to erupt in roughly 10,000 years, but it is yet to be confirmed, according to nps.gov.
The volcano’s eruption could cause massive chaos within the U.S, with the need for billions of dollars worth of construction. Scientists have predicted the destruction of crops causing massive food shortages, as well as destruction of essential service structures such as power plants. Scientists are still taking precautions to get an accurate understanding of when the volcano will show any signs of erupting. They do this by watching an array of monitors placed throughout the region, according to nps.gov.
NASA has already planned to defuse the massive volcano’s eruption with water, according to MNN. NASA is planning on circulating water to keep things cool, but it will most likely not be enough, reported discovermagazine.com.
Scientists are expecting the eruption to be split into two smaller discharges. Scientists find that even the second, smaller eruption, would have been the biggest explosion in ages, according to nationalgeographic.com. “We just recognized an eruption 300 times the size of Mount St. Helens,” said Ben Ellis, a volcanologist and postdoctoral researcher At Washington State University. The larger of the two proposed blasts would rank as the fourth largest eruption to be known, stated nationalgeographic.

Although the eruption of this Super volcano is likely to occur for millenniums from now, scientists are not taking any chances. “More research will be needed to verify the specific timing,” states researcher and Arizona State graduate Hannah Shamloo,” But in the meantime, this is a powerful reminder about the dangerous world lurking under our feet,” she added, reported MNN.

I think this was a great article that explained what the scientists were thinking of doing.

I heard about this on television. other then the erupting part, a super volcano seems super awesome.

It is very interesting that this volcano is going to erupt in 10,000 years or earlier but still it is very dangerous for the entire US. I also hope that it does not blow up while this generation is still alive.

i hope it does not blow up but still interesting
