Sailor Gutzler, 7 year old, survived when her plane crashed in Kentucky, on the way to Florida, on January 2nd. After the crash, she then ventured three quarters of a mile to get help, reported abcnews.go.com.
“She indicated to us that she believed her family was deceased but that she hoped they were just sleeping,” Kentucky State Police Lt. Brent White said Sunday. “I was literally just struck by how calm she was able to be and the ability for her to give us this information,” reported abcnews.go.com
According to edition.cnn.com, Sailor not only survived the plane crash, but only received minor physical injuries, suffering broken wrist. What she did suffer greatly was the loss of her family. On this day, Sailor lost her father, Marty Gutzler, mother, Kimberly Gutzler, sister, Piper Gutzler, and cousin Sierra Wilder.
Sailor headed towards a light she saw distant in the woods. This light ended up being the house of Larry Wilkins, who immediately called 911. “She’s a terribly brave little girl, I’ll tell you that,” Wilkins said. “I can’t imagine a 7-year-old doing that.”
A family friend of the Gutzlers’, Fred Prug, stated, “He loved flying. You didn’t have a conversation with Marty without him talking about flying. Another family friend stated he was a very meticulous and knowledgeable pilot. The Federal Aviation Administration records show Marty as a registered flight instructor.
Investigators aren’t sure what caused the plane to crash, but stated Marty Gutzler reported engine problems before losing contact with air traffic controls.
