Pickleball is the Fastest Growing Sport in America

Combining qualities of badminton, tennis, and ping pong, pickleball is a fast-paced game of skill and is becoming the fastest growing sport in America with over 4 million players, ¨a whopping 21.3% increase from 2019 to 2020,” parade.com stated.

Pickleball, according to pickleballcentral.com, is a paddle sport played with a wiffle ball, a badminton-size court, which is 44 feet by 17 feet, and a tennis-style net.

Anyone can learn how to play pickleball. Similar to ping pong, the player hits the ball with a paddle over the net. People can either play singles or doubles. Pickleball is a fun way to bond with your family, hangout out with friends, and stay healthy and fit, according to sportsimports.com.

Pickleball originated in 1965 by three fathers, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. The fathers created it when their families could not find something to do. According to pickleball.org,  “Pritchard and Bell looked for some badminton equipment and could not find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball.” They created rules and provided a game for family and friends to play.

The rules of play for this sport are similar to those of badminton, with some variation, according to upstatepickleball.com. To start the game, the ball is served diagonally to the opponent’s side underhanded without bouncing it off the court. To score a point, you have to be serving. When underhand serving, if the opponent fails to return the ball, the server gets a point. Once a player reaches a score of 11 points, they are the winner but must win by at least two points.

Equipment needed for pickleball includes pickleball paddles, a pickleball, a pickleball court, and a pickleball net, according to rookieroad.com. Pickleball paddles range from $20 to more than $200, according to thepickler.com. You can get some affordable pickleball paddles from Big 4 Sporting Goods and DICK´S Sporting Goods.

A couple of local pickleball courts are located at Las Palomas Park and Yorba Linda Parks & Recreation. A local pickleball club is the Anaheim Tennis & Pickleball Center

In an interview with the Matador Messenger, Donna, an employee of the  Anaheim Tennis & Pickleball Center, stated why their facilities are a great place to play pickleball. She stated how it’s organized and clean, with really good coaches and 10 pickleball courts.
