Paola Santiago and The River of Tears
By Tehlor Kay Mehia
Based on Mexican mythology, Paola Santiago and The River of Tears focuses on a twelve-year-old Mexican girl named Paola Santiago, who adores space and her fortune-telling mother. Pao doesn’t know who her father is, because he left when she was three. She has two friends named Dante and Emma, and every day they have junk-food picnics by the Gila River. The Gila is a no-go zone for most kids – including Pao. Her mother is a fortune-teller who is set on believing in ghosts and spirits like La Mano Panchona and La Llorona, and ever since a girl in Pao’s grade drowned last year, Pao is strictly banned. But then, a radio show announces that a kidnapper is in Emma’s area, and during the next picnic, Emma is gone! Pao and Dante chase down adventure to go on a daring quest full of funny, sarcastic comments to save their friend.
This is a wonderful book for people who are fans of the Percy Jackson series, as it is published by Rick Riordan Presents! It is a 384-page book, written by Tehlor Kay Mehia. It’s a great pick for the readers who love mystery and magic, and it covers what kids like Paola and Dante go through every day in terms of bigotry and stereotypes. The series is also planned to come out on Disney Plus as a series. More information can be found here.
The Mysterious Benedict Society
By Trenton Lee Stewart
Reynie is an orphan who has an “unusual love of truth”, as the eccentric Mr. Benedict puts it. He enters into a test from an advertisement he read in a newspaper: “Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?” He passes all the tests along with a few other children: Constance, Sticky, and Kate. They are all recruited by Mr. Benedict, who sends them on the puzzle-solving journey of a lifetime.
This book is also a show featured on Disney Plus. This particular read is rather long, but is certainly all the better if you enjoy it! This is also a mystery book, as implied by the title, and has readers sitting at the edge of their seats.
