Hour long meet and greet lines full of happy children are usually for Disney’s famous Mickey Mouse. However, at Tokyo Disney, Shanghai Disney, and Hong Kong Disney, the new “Duffy and Friends” line is more popular than the classic mouse.

“…There is a critical difference between Duffy in the US and in Japan: guests absolutely love him in Japan, and he is a character with a meaningful presence,” stated Tom Bricker on disneytouristblog.com.

The story of “Duffy and Friends” starts when Minnie Mouse made a bear named Duffy for Mickey Mouse to take on his travels, according to dlp.info.  Minnie later made another bear, this time for Duffy, named Shellie May, according to land.allears.net

Duffy became friends with Gelatoni when he dropped his gelato and Gelatoni picked it up and started painting with it, according to tsumthing.com. He later met Stella Lou when he saw her dancing ballet, stated disney-magical-kingdom-blog.blogspot.com

At Shanghai Disneyland and Tokyo Disney, there are long lines at the Fuji Film sponsored photo areas where tourists can take a photo with their own Duffy Bear and the amusement park character for a great photo shot, according to travelandleisure.com.

“For whatever reason, Tokyo parkgoers immediately latched on to Duffy. He became so popular that, in 2010, a live “My Friend Duffy” show replaced Donald Duck’s show at Tokyo DisneySea,” according to Amanda Pillon on sweetyhigh.com.

According to disneyparks.disney.go.com, Disney instituted the “Duffy and Friends” line in the Epcot Center at Disney World and in California Adventure in Disneyland.

In 2011, “Duffy and friends” was added to Aulani, the Disney Resort and Spa located on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, according to laughingplace.com.

Next time when visiting Disneyland Parks, keep an eye out for the new group of friends.

It is amazing how really popular old characters are slowly getting replaced by new ones.

I liked this article because I love Disney and it’s interesting to see on the other side of the earth Mickey isn’t the popular one. Plus I like all of Star Lu’s articles.
