Disneyland officials announced recently that fans will have until Jan. 2. to experience the dark elevator-style ride. But not without one last Halloween trick (or is it a treat?).

Starting Sept. 9, the Tower takes a dark turn with what’s called the Late Check-Out. Visitors who come in the evening will experience the free-fall ride completely in the dark, according to latimes.com.

The 12-year-old ride, based on Rod Serling’s 1960’s science-fiction TV show, is being replaced by a Marvel-themed attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!, according to ocregister.com,

While it’s always disappointing to see a classic Disney attraction transform into something brand new, you just KNOW the Guardians of the Galaxy ride will be amazing (it might also lead to an entire Marvel area of Disney California Adventure). And if you’re still seriously missing The Hollywood Tower, it’s still operational in Disney World, Tokyo DisneySea, and Disney Studios Park in Paris, reported hellogiggles.com. You’ve still got options to ~drop~ in for a visit.

Universal Studios owns the rights to use Marvel characters in its Florida and Japan theme parks, posted Theme Park Insider. Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Florida features a Marvel Superhero land. Universal Studios Japan is home to an Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man dark ride.

The Hollywood Tower Hotel will be transformed into a fortress-like museum run by the mysterious Collector. The Guardians of the Galaxy have become the Collector’s latest prized possession, suspended in display cases over a vast abyss. Rocket Raccoon escapes and hatches a plan to rescue his fellow Guardians that involves park visitors and the museum’s elevator, according to www.latimes.com.

We’re just going to have to wait and see what happens. For now, though it’s very sad to say goodbye to the Hollywood Tower Hotel, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout! is set to open in the Summer of 2017, according to hellogiggles.com. Perfectly timed to the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2.
