Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Superintendent, Dr. Doug Domene has announced at a Matador Messenger Press Conference, he will become of Dean of College Education at Hope University upon his retirement, in June 2016.
Hope International University is a private Christian university founded in 1928, and located just down the street from Cal State Fullerton. Hope University has a total number of 819 undergraduate students.
Dr. Domene hopes to see programs such as the “PYLUSD Advantage”, instituted during his tenure, continue “now and forever” as a “commitment to better prepare our students for college and careers.”
The intent of the “strategic plan is to serve as a “roadmap, setting forth specific initiatives that will guide our decision-making to ensure that our students experience the advantage of an outstanding education, added Dr. Domene.
“Our Board of Education engaged a wide range of stakeholders, which included parents, students, community members, business and civic leaders, and staff” to develop “a new district strategic plan that will shape the future of our school district,” stated Dr. Domene on the PYLUSD website
Dr. Domene also has expanded the Career Technical Education (CTE) Academies and has put in specific requirements to get into the academies.
During his time as the superintendent has hired additional mental health professionals to assist students suffering from illnesses like anxiety and/or depression. This helps people get provided support at higher level or greater degree than before.
Dr. Domene had expanded Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), which is a college prep program. Now every middle school and high school has this program. If the schools don’t then they are planning on getting AVID in the near future.
When he was in college his original dream was not to become a teacher, it was to become a pastor. He also wanted to be a baseball coach, but while he was coaching he could also be an English teacher. While he was in college he played baseball and majored in English.
During Dr. Domene’s 31 tenure at PYLUSD, he has served as a the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Assistant Principal at El Dorado, Assistant Principal at Esperanza High School, Dean of Attendance/Director of Activities at Esperanza High School, teacher/coach at Esperanza High School. His favorite job was being the superintendent, in which he work as for four years. When being the superintendent, Dr. Domene said his favorite part of the job was getting to visit schools and hiring new members.
Dr. Domene’s advice to the next superintendent is, “‘Be quick to listen and slow to speak’ which simply means be a good listener, seek advice and help from those in leadership because they truly care.”
