Four Cups of Coffee a Day Keeps the Doctor Away?

Although coffee has had many blamed for many illnesses like stunting peoples’ growth, heart disease, and even cancer, resent research has proven that coffee may not be so bad after all, according to Dr. Don Hensrud of the Mayo Clinic.

“A huge study of more than 25,000 coffee drinkers in South Korea shows that moderate daily consumption—that’s three to five cups a day—is associated with a decreased risk for coronary artery calcium. CAC is a great predictor of future heart disease and hasn’t been studied much in the past,” stated CNN.

Researchers have found that four cups of coffee a day can reduce one’s risk for melanoma, which is a highly dangerous skin cancer. However, it must be leaded. Studies also show that decaffeinated coffee does not  provide protection, reported CNN.

Another surprising study showed that there is no direct connection between coffee and an increased risk for cancer and heart disease. Instead researchers found an association between coffee consumption and a “decreased risk overall mortality and possibly cardiovascular mortality,” stated Dr. Hensrud.

Coffee has effects on people due to a genetic mutation that slows the break down of coffee. This genetic mutation is fairly common. “So, how quickly you metabolize coffee may affect your own health risk,” explained Dr. Hensrud.

“Some populations can find coffee consumption potentially harmful. People with sleep issues or uncontrolled diabetes may need to ask their doctors before adding caffeine to their diets. There’s also a concern about caffeine use among youths,” stated CNN.
