Cheap but Chic Valentine’s Day 2021

This Valentine’s Day – instead of giving stereotypical gifts, try giving that special someone a gift from the heart and make something homemade. Matador Messenger staff has cooked up something special for you to make!

Heart In a Nest

Ingredients:

 

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 slices of bread, your choice 
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Heart shaped Cookie Cutter
  • Water

 

Sunny Side up Version: 

  1. Heat a pan to medium-low heat. Put the butter in the pan and let it melt. 
  2. Meanwhile, crack the two eggs into a bowl and wait
  3. Get your two slices of bread and use your cookie cutter to cut into it leaving heart-shaped bread slices. Save the bread slices for later
  4. Cut two bread slices with the cookie cutter and place them into the pan. Turn over once toasted to your preference on one side
  5. Gently pour the eggs into the heart-shaped hole and pour a tablespoon of water on the side of the pan. Cover with a lid immediately and cook until liking.
  6. Turn off the heat and serve both with your topping of choice
  7. Enjoy!

 

Scrambled version:

  1. Heat up a pan to medium heat. Put a bit of butter in the pan and let it melt. 
  2. Crack your egg into a bowl and beat it, flavoring with salt and pepper
  3. Get your two slices of bread and use your cookie cutter to cut into it leaving heart-shaped bread slices. Save the bread slices for later
  4. Put your bread slices and heart-shaped bread slices into your pan. Pour the egg mixture into the hole. Flip over after three minutes
  5. Cook the other side for 2 minutes, then turn off the heat and serve with your heart-shaped toast. Serve with toppings of your choice.
  6. Enjoy!

 

Love Me, Love Me Not

 

Supplies:

 

  • Your choice of Frosting
  • Your choice of boxed cake mix, prepared
  • 1 ½ White chocolate
  • 1 ½ Dark Chocolate
  • ⅔ Heavy Whipping Cream
  • Red food coloring 
  • Cupcake tins
  • Heart Sprinkles
  • Cupcake liners
  • Wooden spoon

 

  1. Bake your cupcakes according to box instructions
  2. Boil ⅔  cup of heavy whipping cream until bubbling
  3. Pour half over 1 ½ cup of each chocolate, separate
  4. Dye the white chocolate mixture (ganache) with one drop of the food coloring
  5. With the end of the spoon, poke holes into the cupcakes
  6. Fill the cupcakes alternating the white and dark chocolate
  7. Spread the frosting over the cupcakes and top with sprinkles
  8. Enjoy!

 

Burnt Heart Creme Brulee 

 

  • ½ cup of your choice of Ice cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ¼ cup of white sugar
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 glass ramekin
  • Small heart shaped cookie cutter
  • Boiling water
  • Metal cake tin

 

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees
  2. Melt ½ cup of your ice cream in a microwave for 40 seconds
  3. Meanwhile, separate your egg white from your egg yolk
  4. Pour your egg yolk into the melted ice cream and mix until combined
  5. Pour your mixture into the ramekin
  6. Place your ramekin into the cake tin and pour the boiling water until half full in the cake tin
  7. Bake for 45 minutes
  8. Refrigerate for 2 hours
  9. Meanwhile, pour half of the sugar in a bowl
  10.  And add in 1 drop of the red food colouring in the sugar, and mix until fully combined and colored
  11. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  12. Take out your creme brulee, and pour the white sugar on top
  13. Put your cookie cutter and pour the red sugar inside
  14. Remove the cookie cutter and place in the oven in the previous cake tin and water
  15.  Keep a close eye on the creme brulee for any signs that it’s caramelized
  16. Take out when fully caramelized, and refrigerate for five minutes
  17. Enjoy!
