Cheap Chic: Celebrate Spring with Festive Crafts and Treats

If you are looking for something new to spice up your spring, then here are some delicious treats for spring!

Strawberry Shortcakes


3 ½ cups of strawberries, hulled

3 tablespoons of sugar

Whipped Cream



  1. Place half of the strawberries in a large bowl.
  2. Use a potato masher to crush them.
  3. Slice the remaining strawberries and add to bowl with crushed strawberries.
  4. Add 3 tablespoons to the strawberries and use a rubber spatula to stir until combined.
  5. Let sit until sugar has dissolved and strawberries are juicy, at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
  6. Cook your biscuits then let them cool.
  7. Place your whipped cream in a small bowl then turn it slowly. DON’T over whip your whip cream!
  8. Place your strawberry jam on the bottom of the biscuit then top it with your whipped cream and the biscuit top.

Chocolate Mug Cakes


¼ cup all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon baking powder

4 teaspoons unsalted butter, cut into four pieces

3 teaspoons bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips

2 large eggs

¼ cup sugar

2 teaspoons cocoa powder

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

⅛ teaspoon salt


  1. In a small bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder.
  2. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine butter and chocolate chips.
  3. Heat in microwave at 50% power for 1 minute.
  4. Stop microwave and stir mixture with spoon.
  5. Heat in microwave at 50% power until melted, about 1 minute.
  6. Remove bowl from microwave.
  7. Add eggs, sugar, vanilla, salt to chocolate mixture and whisk until smooth.
  8. Add flour mixture and whisk until smooth.
  9. Use spoon to divide batter evenly between 2 coffee mugs.
  10. Place mugs on opposite sides of microwave turntable.
  11. Cook in microwave at 50% percent power for 1 minute (batter will rise to just below rim of mug and cake should look slightly wet around edges- if top still looks wet, cook in microwave at 50% percent power for another 15 to 30 seconds).
  12. Use over mitts to remove mugs from microwave and let cool for 5 minutes.
  13. Serve warm.

Strawberry-Peach Smoothies


1 ripe banana, peeled and broken into 4 pieces

1 tablespoon honey

1 cup frozen strawberries

1 cup frozen peaches

1 cup plain yogurt

¼ cup orange juice



Rubber spatula

2 glasses


  1. Place banana and honey in a blender.
  2. Place blender top on and hold firmly in place with folded dish towel.
  3. Process until smooth, about 10 seconds.
  4. Stop blender and scrape down sides of blender jar with the rubber spatula.
  5. Replace lid and continue to process until smooth, about 30 seconds longer.
  6. Pour into glasses and serve.
