Cheap but Chic: Celebrate Fall with Colorful Crafts and Delicious Snacks

Making your home look decorative for the fall and Thanksgiving season can be quite expensive. Since most families are staying close to home this year because of COVID-19, making your home look decorative is more important than ever. With these Thanksgiving crafts and decorations, you can have the privilege of feeling festive, without having to pay the price. 

“Fall Mason Jar Flower Line Up””

This colorful decoration is a great way to welcome fall. Most of these supplies may even be found at home.

What you will need:

  • Four mason jars
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Orange paint or any fall color of your choice
  • Paintbrush
  • Real or artificial flowers
  • Twine
  • Burlap fabric
  • Glue
  • Steps:
    1.  Paint the inside of your jars with the paint. Let dry.
    2.  Wrap the fabric around the jar and cut to fit.
    3. Glue the fabric onto each of the mason jars. 
    4. Shape the pipe cleaners to spell out each letter of the word “FALL”. Then glue one letter to each piece of burlap on the jar.
    5. Take the twine and tie a piece to the top of each of the jars.
    6. Lastly, take the flowers of your choice and put a few in each of the jars.

          These treats are super easy to make and they look like little Pilgrim hats.

          What you will need:

          • 12 chocolate-striped shortbread cookies
          • Tube of yellow decorators frosting
          • M&M’s®️ or Reese’s Pieces®️
          • 12 peanut butter cups

          Steps:

          1. Take the shortbread cookies and place them upside down.
          2. Put a drop of the frosting (it doesn’t matter which color) on the top of a peanut butter cup. Then put the peanut butter cup on the cookie frosting side down.
          3. Take the yellow frosting and put a layer of it around the peanut butter cup.
          4. Lastly, put a drop of the frosting on an orange or yellow m&m®️ or Reese’s Pieces®️ and place it on the bottom of the peanut butter cup to make it look like a buckle.         Photo from Pinterest

          “Grateful Pumpkins”

          Who needs paper when you write expressions of gratitude on a pumpkin!

           

          What you will need: 

          • Any sized pumpkin
          • Black permanent marker  

          Steps:

          1. Start at the top of the pumpkin and write phrases and words of gratitude
          2. Pass the pumpkin around to your friends and family and have them add what they are thankful for this year.

          “Turkey Snacks”

          These snacks are super easy to make and are very festive.

          What you will need: 

          • Oreos®️
          • Candy corn
          • Eyeball Sprinkles (you can also use black and white frosting)
          • Orange chocolate chips (or you can use orange frosting)

          Steps:

          1. Open an Oreo®️ cookie in half and place 4 candy corn on the bottom cookie. Make sure the white part of the candy corn is on the frosting of the cookie and the orange and yellow parts are hanging off.
          2. Put the two halves of the cookie back together with the candy corn inside. 
          3. Put a drop of frosting on the eyeball sprinkles and place them on top of the cookie so they look like eyes. If you choose to use frosting instead, put a drop of white frosting on the cookie. Then put a drop of black frosting on top of the white.
          4. Take an orange chocolate chip and put a drop of frosting on the bottom of it, and place it in the center of the cookie to make it look like a beak. If you use frosting instead, Photo from Pinterest

          put a drop of it on the center of the cookie in a triangular shape.       

             

          “Leaf Light”

          This decoration is perfect for Thanksgiving and many of the supplies could be found in your own home.

        What you will need:

        • Mason jar
        • Orange paint (or any color of your choice)
        • Paintbrush
        • Pen and Paper
        • Twine
        • A battery-operated tea light  candle
        • Popcorn kernels
        • Tape
        • ScissorsSteps:
          1. Get your pen and paper and draw a leaf (you can use a computer and print it out instead). Then cut it out.
          2. Tape your paper leaf to the center of your mason jar. 
          3. Paint the jar with the paper leaf taped on it. This will create a leaf shape on the jar. Do not paint underneath the leaf. 
          4. Let the paint dry, then remove the paper leaf to reveal a leaf shape on the jar.
          5. Put some popcorn kernels in the jar. Fill about ¼ of the jar with kernels. 
          6. Place the fake candle on top of the kernels in the jar.
          7. Lastly, wrap twine around the top of the jar and tie it into a bow.
