California School Start Times Set to Change by Fall of 2022

California School Start Times Set to Change by Fall of 2022

California Senate Bill (SB) 328, signed in October 2019, will soon change the start times of all California schools, requiring middle schools to start no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

School start times for elementary school vary between 7:50 & 8:25, 8:50 for middle school, and 8:30 for high schools. Similarly, the end times changed as well; for elementary schools, the times vary between 2:15 and 2:55. 3:30 is the common end time for middle schools and 3:20 for all the high schools.

All schools in California must apply the new school schedule by July 1st, 2022.

Because school end times for most schools are later, extracurricular activities such as sports that are not held by the school must change in correlation with the new school end times.

According to PYLUSD, the Senate Committee on Education says the main reason school times have changed is that, “later school start times have been shown to improve grades, reduce depression symptoms, reduce caffeine use, reduce substance abuse, reduce tardiness, improve attendance rates, improve graduation rates, and reduce car crashes caused by teen drivers.”

For those who are concerned about the child care schedule, child care before and after school schedules will stay the same. PYLUSD states, “Child care will be available from 6:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.”

Bus schedules will be also modified to accommodate the new school start time for the 2022-2023 school year.
