All five BYMS instrumental bands and Orchestra had their last concert, Yorba Meadows, on Thursday, June 1st on the BYMS inner track. This concert was BYMS band director, Mrs. Watson’s last concert with the Bernardo before her retirement.
In an interview with the Matador Messenger, we asked Mrs. Rita Watson what the highlights of the concert were, she answered, “So many highlights. Great performances by all of the groups.” she then added, “Eagle Scout project presented to the music program from Brian Zarske (sousaphone racks) An alumni band who came to perform a couple of numbers.”
Every Bernardo band played along with the Bernardo Orchestra and many alumni band members. Some of the band members had the original sheet of music for “Flying Cadets” from 3 or more years ago.
Jack, Jacob Katz, and Quinn Pope stated, “The highlight of the night was when the Alumni band came to play with us and to see Mrs. Watson so happy.” in an interview with the Matador Messenger.
“It’s bittersweet.  I know I’m going to miss doing performances with such great students.  I know I’m going to miss so many wonderful parents who have worked so hard for our music program.  But, I am ready to start doing other things with my life.” Stated Mrs. Watson
Mrs. Watson had many plans for her retirement. Watson said, “I plan to travel.  I have four trips set up right now.  I hope to read a whole bunch of books.” added Mrs. Watson, “ My house needs to be cleaned!!  I hope to start to train to run a whole marathon.  I run half marathons quite often, but my “bucket list” has a full marathon on it.”
