Double the trouble or double the fun. BYMS was invaded by a lot of twins on Friday, December 2, 2016.

BYMS has 12 sets of twins, which means 1.64% of students at this school are a twin. Nine sets are in seventh grade, and the other 3 are eighth graders.

When in an interview with the Matador Messenger, Savannah Bloom stated, “A funny moment we have together is when I blowed out his candles and his face went from a smile to a frown and he got really mad on our birthday.” Robert Bloom said, “The best thing about being a twin is I always have someone to annoy.”

“The rate of twin births in the United States reached a record high in 2014, according to an annual report released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. There were 33.9 twins born for every 1,000 births in 2014,” stated cnn.com. This increase of twin and multiple birth rates could possibly be due to the revolution in reproductive technology, reported cnn.com.

“There are two types of twins – identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic),” according to betterhealth.vic.gov.au. Identical twins have exactly the same genetic information. “Approximately one quarter of identical twins are mirror images of each other, which means the right side of one child matches the left side of their twin,” added betterhealth.vic.gov.au.

Fraternal twins may look alike or not.“The genetic similarity between fraternal twins is the same as any two siblings, about 50%,” stated verywell.com. Some researches believe that there might be a third twin-type. “This theory is an attempt to explain why some fraternal twins look identical,” stated betterhealth.vic.gov.au.

“The best thing about being a twin is feeling duplicated,” stated Jack Katz.

“Since twins are usually premature, they are more likely to have lower birth weights. Prematurity is associated with an increased risk of a number of disorders, including jaundice,” stated betterhealth.vic.gov.au. Normally, the length of gestation for a single baby is 40 weeks. However, gestation for twins is 38 weeks.
