“I am a big believer in education; it’s very valuable, I love to reward people with good effort. It’s one little thing I could help with the community to excel in their smarts, and that’s what inspired me to create the honor roll cards,” stated Lynn Melton, Bernardo Yorba Principal for Wednesday, March 16th.
Joaquin’s Mexican Restaurant has been presenting Honor Roll cards to the Bernardo Yorba Middle School Students since the early 1990’s. Today, Joaquin’s presents those same cards to three PYLUSD middle schools, adding Travis Ranch and Yorba Linda Middle School in the past few years.
“I had a blast serving as ‘Principal for the Day.’ Mr. Valburg did a great job showing me nearly every class in the school. It looks like the students are learning many up to date technology skills as well as the traditional academics. What a fantastic school the Bernardo Yorba staff and students have made,” added Melton.
Melton grew up in a family of educators, she has always held a high priority for education. Her four children all attended Bernardo Yorba between 1992 and 1999.
As a business owner and a part of the local community, she saw an opportunity to reward students that had achieved the status of being on the Honor Roll List.
“Over the past 35 years of serving Yorba Linda, I have watched young couples start dating, fall in love, and raise their children. Those children have become customers bringing their dates, then their spouses to Joaquin’s and eventually their own children. I am now serving the grand-children and great-grand-children of our customers from the early 1980’s. It is very fun to watch,” stated Lynn Melton.
Lynn Melton added, “I enjoy watching those proud students come into Joaquin’s to redeem those cards and get a free taco dinner. Since we hire local high school students as hosts and/or bussers, some of our employees are first introduced to Joaquin’s by coming into the restaurant to redeem that honor roll card.”
