Matadors wishing to represent BYMS in this year’s PYLUSD District Track Meet should sign up by attending practice every Wednesday after school from 3:30 to 4:15 at the BYMS track.

Last year’s District Track Meet took place at Valencia High School, on March 3rd, 2015. In last year’s District Track Meet, BYMS won a total of 38 medals. 13 of the medals won by BYMS were gold, 13 were silver, and 12 were bronze. Of the 400 competitors at the track meet, 96 were brought by BYMS and they ranked 1st place for the district.

BYMS Matadors competed in every event at the track meet last year. During many of the events last year, BYMS seventh grade boys and girls, and eighth grade boys and girls placed from 1st to 4th. “BYMS had an exceptionally strong showing at the track meet in terms of medals, but I was also impressed with the team spirit that was demonstrated all night long,” said Mr. Valburg, the BYMS principal.

Ms. Barton, a BYMS physical education teacher, and Mrs. Cyrus, a BYMS math teacher, will be leading practices for the BYMS team with help from Mr. Kish, a BYMS language arts teacher,  and Mrs. Watson, the BYMS band teacher.

On the day of the track meet the BYMS team will be riding a bus to YLHS, and  are highly encouraged to ride the bus back to BYMS. For any reason if a student needs to leave early, their parents may sign them out with Ms. Barton or Mrs. Cyrus.

The events at the track meet this year are once again the 100m sprint, 200m sprint, 300m sprint, 4X100m relay, 4X200m relay, mile run, long jump, high jump, and the shot put.

Each student will race in categories based on their grade and gender. “We will do our best to find the event that best suits each student,” Ms. Barton stated. Permission slips will be handed out over the next couple of weeks. “Parents are welcome to attend the event as spectators and show their BYMS pride,” explained Ms. Barton.

“The District Track Meet is a good place to hang out with friends and have a good time. Getting to run for my school excited me because I love to run and compete for my team, and my team is Bernardo,” stated Kyle Kirk, a participating eighth grade  BYMS student in this year’s District Track Meet.

“This event is very fun because I’m spending time with my friends and having a good time while competing,” added Kyle Kirk.
