Principal Valburg : “Treat Others as They Ought or Could Be”


“Prior to coming to Bernardo, I knew very little about this school.  After a couple of weeks I knew that our students were exceptionally kind, thoughtful and respectful.  I also knew that the teachers and staff were exceptionally caring and committed to the students” stated the Mr. Valburg regarding his first impression on Bernardo.

Mr. Valburg started his career by teaching seven years in the Bellflower Unified School District and was an assistant principal for one year. Then he received a Master’s Degree in Public School Administration from the University of La Verne. After being an assistant principal in Nichloas Junior High School for two years, he was the principal for Rolling Hills School for nine years and at Orangethorpe School for four years. Before coming to Bernardo he was served in Van Buren Elementary school.Now Bernardo is his new home.

“As always, the years are also learners and they are implementing new things like Google Classroom, Criterion and the new math curriculum. They always go above and beyond to provide the best learning experiences as possible” stated the principal of Bernardo about what he thought about the teachers.

He also said “I want my new seventh graders and new eighth graders to try their best and always work hard.”

“BYMS has a lot of school spirit and the students and staff really like being here at this school. We all have fun!” Stated Mr. Valburg.Mr. Valburg grew up in Albany,Oregon, went to South Albany High School and, then Biola University.

Mr. Valburg often reads “Words of Wisdom” to the campus daily. When asked what “Words of Wisdom” inspired him, he stated the words of  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.”
