Nine BYMS students have been chosen as finalists for this year’s PTA Reflections competition “The world  would be a better place if…” and will move forward to the PTA Council and District level competitions.

Finalists include Catherine Miller, Peyton Carey, Myka Comia, Jessica F. Kierulff, Justin Stevens, Ryan Blank, Ilsa Bauer, Ashely Payne, and Justina Lai, according to Barb Buckely, the second vice-president of the PTA, who is in charge of fundraising.

All 31 participants will be invited to an ice cream party on Thursday, November 20th at break in the MPR, and will receive participation gifts, finalists prizes, and their artwork.  Announcements will be made at t school and PTA will send an e-mail reminder on Wednesday November 19th.

Students were challenged to produce an artistic response to the theme in the categories of  dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, photography, or visual arts

“National PTA’s Reflections program encourages students in pre-K through grade 12 to explore and be involved in the arts,” stated Mrs. Buckley. Each submission is judged by a PTA committee based upon the following rubric:

Interpretation of Theme How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement 20 pts
Artistic Merit/ Creativity How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation 10 pts
Mastery of Medium The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area 10 pts

PTA would also like to thank Mrs. Perez for “helping (to) make our Reflections event this year a huge success.”

“It was actually a collaborative effort with Mrs. Bailey,” responded Mrs. Perez. ” She asked her students to create an artistic response to the theme,  I challenged my students in fourth period to participate and gave them the option of entering in any category.”
