Members of of the Newfoundland & Labrador Beard and Mustache Club created a calendar called Merb’ys. Like most calendars there are puppies, quotes, and island pictures, but not this calendar. The pictures on this calender are of the men dressed like mermaids.

The men created the calendar for a charity called Spirit horse. This charity aims to teach life skills to children and adults with mental health issues with therapeutic recreation with horses, according to

The men called the calendar Merb’ys because of two words, mermaid and buddy. B’y is Newfoundland slang for buddy. The men were focusing on the friendships of men in a whimsical way, according to

“Photo shoots with men are already tough as it is, but since these men are older it is more challenging,” according to William Whelan, who is one of the mermaids. William also said, “This experience to me has been surreal. I have struggled with body image my entire life. Fat kid from day one. I have avoided social situations involving the removal of my shirt on more occasions than a grown man should. Shame. That’s how I felt. Being a part of this has made me 100% more comfortable in my own skin. About time, seeing as I’m 36.”

The Merb’ys calendar was originally an idea of the founder of the club, Hasan Hai. He came up with the idea after seeing photo’s of a merman themed photoshoot on facebook. He then posted what he called “open call to the universe”. More than 80 men responded to do the photo shoot.

In the calendar 30 men can be found posing in pubs, pumpkin patches, and the beach.
