Studio Ghibli in partner with French studios, Why Not Productions and Wild Bunch are creating a feature film titled The Red Turtle, a film about a man on a deserted island battling a large red sea turtle. It will debut at Cannes Film Festival and be shown in French theaters in June 2016, according to highsnobiety.com

“The Red Turtle doesn’t contain any dialogue and presents a mesmerizing Cast Away-like storyline, featuring whimsical creatures and stunning backdrops very much to the tune of Studio Ghibli’s signature art direction.”, stated Hypebeast.

The trailer shows a man on raft trying to battle a large red turtle. A woman appears at that same island, the two fall in love and have a child. The child is soon swept away by a large wave, according to Animation Magazine.

“The film looks stunning and very special, which is surprising considering it is a 2D animation film in an age when 3D has become the norm.” stated highsnobiety.com

The U.S. release has not yet been confirmed but, it is rumored to be released sometime in September of 2016.
