Mattel, the maker of Barbie, has recently announced that Barbies will now be available with seven new skin tones, and three new body styles in addition to the original form. In 2016, they will be soon featuring petite, tall, and curvy.
“Imagination comes in all shapes and sizes. That’s why all of Barbie is evolving.” states Mattel. The company wants to demonstrate to children that it doesn’t matter what you look like, or what shape or size you are. Every girl is beautiful in their own way.
“We have to let girls know that it doesn’t matter what shape you come in, that anything is possible,” Tania Missad, director of consumer insights for the doll line said in a video on the Barbie brand website.
Impressively, more Barbies are sold every year than babies are born. 4,000,000 babies are born in the U.S each year, so 24 times that is the amount of dolls sold per year. Every second, three Barbies are sold around the word, according to CNN. These dolls aren’t going anywhere, 57 years and still going strong as the most popular doll in history.
