‘Grease: Live’, Fox’s first televised live musical aired on Sunday, January 31, at 7pm, and averaged 12.2 million viewers and a 4.3 rating among adults 18-49, according to hollywoodreporter.com.
“Fox’s live TV musical overcame technical glitches, a rare Los Angeles rainstorm and the death of a key cast member’s father to score rave reviews on social media and elsewhere,” stated CNN.
Originally produced as a movie for theaters in 1978, the plot concerns high school students Danny and Sandy that are reunited after a summer romance when she transfers to Rydell High. There, Sandy must concend with cynical Rizzo and the Pink Ladies in attempt to win Danny’s heart again, according to imdb.com
“This production wasn’t about hitting notes or taking breath, but rather about making things breathtaking. And time after time, ‘Grease: Live’ succeeded,” stated Daniel Fienberg in The Hollywood Reporter.
The musical starred Julianne Hough as Sandy, Aaron Tveit as Danny Zuko, and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo.
Jessie J and Boyz II opened for the show. Jessie J sang “Grease Is the Word,” Franki Valli’s 1978 hit from the original movie, with Boyz II and Ana Gasteyer joining in.
On Saturday, January 30, the night before Grease Live aired, Vanessa Hudgens’ father, Greg Hudgens, passed away from stage 4 cancer. According to usmagazine.com, she was going to do the show in his honor.
