“Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves,” said Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute.  One of the most influential committees, a group of 10 people whose names are a secret, meet in Europe twice a year  — May and November — at the invitation of Pantone, a company based in Carlstadt, N.J., whose only business is color.

Each year this group meets in a room with only white walls. They do this so everyone in the group can see the objects their colleagues have brought in for inspiration clearly.

“One of our committee [members] came last winter, and he came with a basket full of onions and chopped up all the onions to show how the beauty of the color of an onion is,” publisher and designer David Shah, who runs the secret meeting, told www.npr.org.

According to NPD, a market research group, about half of all the garments sold in the US are directed by Pantone. Over the years, Pantone has acquired over 1,925 textile colors, each with an identifying number.

Whether designers in fashion realize it, the fabrics they choose to design with this year weren’t actually chosen by them…
