“That was then. The show has aged and the singing competition genre has faded. In the recent years the “Idol” audience has eroded at an alarming rate, with losses in total viewership in eight of the last nine seasons. This season, it is drawing under nine million viewers, its fewest ever,” reported nytimes.com.

Monday, May 11, Fox announced that they were going to be shutting down “Idol” for good. The show tweeted that the new upcoming season, which will begin in January, will be its last.

“The show has been declining for years,” stated NBC.

The singing competition show was instantly a hit when it first aired in 2002. The show is about how aspiring singers sing in front of a panel of judges to move on into the next round. The show will be ending its run after 15 seasons, stated LA Times.

“It was not an easy decision,” Gary Newman, the co-chief executive of the Fox Television Group, said on conference call with reporters, ahead of the network’s presentation of its fall lineup to advertisers, “‘ American Idol has been such a vital part of Fox for its run,” stated nytimes.com.
