“When I look down at this golden statue may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid,” said Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o when she accepted her Oscar trophy for best supporting actress for her performance in the film Twelve Years a Slave, during the 86th annual Academy Awards Ceremony sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and   held Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.

The top honors of the night went to Twelve Years a Slave for Best Picture and Gravity won seven Oscars, the most awards of the night. Matthew McConaughey, from Dallas Buyers Club, was awarded the Oscar for “Best Actor in a Leading Role” and his costar, Jared Leto, won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role was awarded to Cate Blanchett of Blue Jasmine.
The most talked about person of the Academy Awards was the host, Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen started of the show with a monologue, making light jokes about different actors and actresses.

During the show, anticipating that her audience was becoming hungry, Ellen  did the logical thing; she  ordered pizza. Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Meryl Streep, and a few others received some pizza from Ellen, according to peoplestylewatche.com.

Later in the night, Ellen was talking to Meryl Streep about her record-breaking 18 nominations in her career. Ellen decided to try to break another record by taking a selfie with some of the actors and actresses present and ended up breaking Twitter! Overall, Ellen had a very successful night in making people across the globe laugh.

Though the awards were the main focus of the night, there were performances by Pharrell Williams, Karen O, U2, P!nk, Bette Midler, and Idina Menzel, reported entertainment.time.com. Williams performed “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 which certainly made the crowd smile. Karen O sang “The Moon Song” from the movie  Her. The Irish rock group, U2, sang “Ordinary Love,”  a Golden Globe winning song from the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

P!nk paid tribute to The Wizard of Oz’s 50th Anniversary and sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Bette Midler paid tribute to the actors, actresses, and other people in the film industry whom we had lost this past year by singing “Wind Beneath my Wings.” Musical theater star, Idina Menzel, sang the hit song “Let it Go” from Frozen. Later in the night, “Let it Go” won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
