Chau Smith, a seventy-year-old woman wanted to challenge herself one day. So she ran seven marathons, in seven days, on seven continents, according to cnn.com.
Between January 25 and January 31, Chau Smith ran in Perth, Australia; Singapore, Asia; Cairo, Egypt; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Garden City, New York; Punta Arenas, Chile; and King George Island, Antarctica. Each day she woke up and ran 26.2 miles. Then, she would get on an airplane and do it all again, reported cnn.com.
“She didn’t want to publicize this before doing it,” stated Steve Hibbs, owner of the travel company, Marathon Adventures, which set up the trip. “She overcame a lot, and it was just really impressive to see her run and complete the event,” stated vesselnews.io.
“It took me eight months to really train,” Smith said. “The last four months, I really put in long runs. Every week, I ran from 15 miles to 130 miles,” reported vesselnews.io.
Smith stated, “One of the hardest marathons was Cairo because we had an hour delay and landed in Egypt. So we had to rush to our rooms to get ready, but we only had 10 minutes.”
Because of this delay, Smith wanted her group of runners to finish the race in 7 hours; but she wanted all of them to have a goal of 6 hours. She didn’t think she was going to make it so she decided to run a half marathon. However, she finished the full marathon in 5 hours and 51 minutes, stated particlenews.com.
